If you are the primary caregiver for your parent, or spouse and the challenges of caring for them every day is beginning to take a toll on you, it may be time to consider an adult medical day care center.

Adult medical day care centers offer an enjoyable day of socialization, meals, activities, and will provide the social interaction and care your loved one needs while giving you time to do other things. An added benefit is the peace of mind you have knowing they are being taken care of by a professionally trained and caring staff.

Participants attending day care are picked up and returned to their homes at the end of the day. They arrive and have a hot breakfast and lunch is also provided. A typical day can include cards, trivia, current events discussion, art and exercise classes. Activities are designed to enhance the abilities of members with memory challenges or Alzheimer’s disease.

A full time RN, home health aides and a social services director provide support and health services, such as medication administration and health monitoring. The social services director also assists families with the admission process, so no one is overwhelmed with paperwork.

You also have input on the days and hours your loved one attends. If you are considering adult medical day care it would be a good idea to call and schedule a tour. The tour allows you to see what a typical day looks like and gives you the opportunity to see the participants and meet the staff and share with them what you are looking for.

During the tour be sure to ask about funding sources. Most medical day care centers accept private pay, which will average from about $85.00 - $90.00 a day. The Club at Kensington Court also accepts the Veterans Benefit, which allows eligible Veterans to attend two days a week, five hours a day for a minimal co/pay. Kensington Court has also been approved by the Department of Health and Senior Services to administer the Senior Day Services Program for Persons with Alzheimer’s disease. Approval under this program allows participants to attend adult day services up to three days a week, if they meet eligibility criteria. Other funding sources are available and the social services director will point you in the right direction and discuss qualifications for each one.
